OVERVIEW

We’ve living in a new era. The certainties we’ve relied on until now: stable democracies, globalism, multiculturalism, and geopolitical agreement are fragmenting. Trust in our institutions is at a historic low. At a deeper level, many of us are losing trust that society is moving toward a future we'd want to live in.

But when things fall apart, space opens for something new. This is also a time in which exciting ideas can take hold fast. A time to redefine what makes a good society. What does real progress look like, and what values should it be based on? How do fix our media landscape so that we can agree on truth again? What kind of relationship do we need to have with our technology to ensure it supports human flourishing?

None of us know. This course is about asking those questions together and moving forward. We’ll be exploring the emerging edge of the cultural conversation with the help of a brilliant faculty of heterodox thinkers, as well as developing cognitive and conversational skills that help us thrive in uncertainty.

And we won’t stop there. The next step after we’ve made sense is to make an impact. Sensemaking 102 is as much about coming into our agency as it is about making sense of what’s happening in the world. It’s about supporting one another to find ways to make a difference within our own spheres of influence.

The futurist Jordan Hall has described this era as ‘post-strategy’, meaning that any strategies we enact become obsolete so fast that traditional strategizing is effectively obsolete. That's why the skills we’ll be learning aren’t the same ones we use when we know where we’re going. When the landscape changes every day, you need the same kinds of skills you need to cross an ocean. We can aim our ships in a direction and navigate by the stars, but ultimately we’re launching into the unknown. Finding new shores relies on our presence, our creativity and our courage.

HOW IT WORKS

Each week, we’ll gather for a 90 minute session with one of our faculty. Between sessions, small groups (we call them Pods) of four people will engage in practices together and apply what we’re learning into impact, whatever that means in your context. You will also receive a course guide full of theories, further reading, pre-recorded sessions with some of our faculty and optional embodiment practices.

SKILLING UP

We’re also teaming up with facilitators to offer optional embodiment practices and will be announcing more of these soon. At launch, we're partnering with Inspirational Breathing to offer optional breathwork journeys, and founder Nicola Price will drop in to selected sessions to teach simple but effective techniques that help us use our breath to enhance insight.

You’ll also have access to a number of Alexander Beiner’s practices, including Complexity Tolerance Practice and Sovereignty Meditation. You'll learn powerful dialogue techniques like Somatic Inquiry which help us parse out implicit meaning from difficult topics, and mindfulness techniques inspired by John Vervaeke’s work that help us enhance our relevance realisation. As you practice these and more with your pod, you’ll develop a deeper connectedness to one another and the world which ultimately forms the heart of this process, and of any meaningful collective intelligence.

Throughout, we’ll be drawing on a balance of explicit and implicit ways of making sense. We’ll be diving into analysis of what’s going on in politics, culture and economics, as well as learning practices that help us make sense of hidden patterns and layers of implicit meaning. For example, while we look at the social and political drivers of Big Tech, we'll also look at the internet as a shamanic otherworld with its own trance-inducing qualities.

LEVIATHAN

In June, we’re launching our first feature-length Kainos documentary, Leviathan. The documentary explores our growing loss of trust in our institutions and one another, the tension between embodied connection and abstraction that exists in our technology, economy and social fabric, and how we reconcile this duality to imagine and enact new futures.

Most of the faculty on this course are guests in Leviathan, and as a participant you’ll get to watch it before anyone else. The idea is to give a narrative framing that acts as a starting point to the course, and contextualises everything we’re going to learn. You’ll also have early access to the full interviews we recorded with each guest, giving hours of bonus content.

PRACTICALITIES

Our live sessions always happen on Wednesdays at 8pm London / 3pm New York / 12pm Los Angeles and run for 90 minutes. Our first session will be on June 11, and our last on July 30.  Along with weekly sessions, you have the option of joining a Pod of three others for weekly self-organised meetings where we'll discuss the weekly topic in more depth, try out practices and support one another in enacting what you’re learning into your life.

If you aren’t able to join live sessions or be in a pod, you can also choose the ‘Content-Only’ option of the course which will give you everything except these live experiences.

Thousands of people who have now attended one of Alexander’s courses, and the most common feedback is that they are as much a process of personal evolution as they are educational courses. It’s our intention to create a powerful and lasting field that supports you to gain what you need out of this process.
